The Bridgman family moved to Newton-St-Petrock in 1963 and ran a small dairy unit with some beef, sheep & cereals on 154 acres.
Dennis Bridgman was actively involved with group buying through a national farmers co-operative and was a director of the R.G.T.A (Regional Group Traders Association).
On his return to the farm in 1980 Mike Bridgman with his father developed the business and formed a privately owned partnership supplying predominately clay land drainage pipes and other materials to local farmers and contractors. As the business grew the products supplied became more & more diverse and although for years "Bridgmans" were known for supplying drainage materials our stocks of other agricultural materials gradually grew to provide most requisites for the local farming community. At this stage our total staff was 4. Dennis delivering or in the store, Mike running the shop as well as the farm, Ray helping with the farm work and loading & unloading of lorries & one lady doing all the paperwork. Our turnover in the first year was just £160,000.
In 1981 we were joined by Nigel Boreham. Nigel had been previously employed by A.C.T immediately prior to joining "Bridgmans" and his wealth of knowledge and contacts were more than any other reason responsible for the growth of "Bridgmans" during the ensuing years (Nigel is still with us today).
"Bridgmans" stock range & customer base continued to grow over the years and whilst we continued to sell a huge amount of drainage materials (now mainly plastic) we diversified into many other areas especially harvesting materials such as silage sheets, bags, wrap, baler cord & netwrap.
In 1991 Guy Barriaball joined our company. Guy had spent many years as a fencing contractor and working for a fencing material supplier. Guy is still our fencing, cattle & sheep handling equipment expert and has developed this side of the business immensely Guy's product knowledge & expertise is second to none.
In 1995 we were joined by Bill Hill who was running his own animal health & husbandry business in North Devon, Bill enabled us to spread our customer base in this area and still formulate our own range of feed blocks & minerals specially for the needs of local farmers.
Over the years we had forged closer & closer links with "Tony Fennsmiths" originally at Meddon & more recently at Kilkhampton. In 1999, as Tony was reaching retirement age, we took over his very successful business and were lucky enough to take on his staff and customer base as well. Tony's plan to retire did not quite work however as he is still working for us for 3 days a week at our Kilkhampton depot. Tony's right hand man for many years was Charles Jenkins who like Nigel was greatly respected by local farmers. Charles's farming experience holds him in good stead as he is responsible for our feed & fertiliser business.
In 1997 we opened a small depot at Whitstone on the Launceston to red post road which is run by Ron Ellacott and in 2003 we opened a further depot at Blackmoor Gate which is run by Linda Burnell along with our representative in that area Bill Hill.
The main strength of our company is our staff and although I have mentioned our representatives, other core members of staff are equally as important. We have a large percentage of staff that have been with us for over over ten years and this enables us to have expert product knowledge as well as building close relationships with our customers.
Our turnover in 2005 is some 12 million pounds and we endeavour to increase our customer base & trading by giving top quality service at very competitive prices indeed.
We are closed on all bank holidays, also we run a skeleton staff on saturdays
